JPA doctors' career awareness programme

Phew! The week is finally over! :)

For those who dont know, i had been in Hospital Serdang for this whole week. It's a requirement for every applicants for the JPA scholarship that chose medical as their career choice to undergo the five day programme at selected hospitals.

Basically, the guides will bring you around the hospital including the wards, the operation teatre, the clinics and so on to show you how the doctors work in the hospital.

To put it simply, they want to scare the shit out of you and to ensure that you can handle the stress, pressure and sleepless nights.

I did not want to go initially cause i have to skip the entire week of college and exams are lurking around. However, my mom has the greatest power of persuasion that still continues to astound me till today. No wonder, she's good at haggling. the aunties always give in halfway into her ridiculously low offer. LOL

Anyway, the programme is not as boring as i thought it would be. For me, i think the hospital is nice. The whole building was airy and bright and clean. At first, i was apprehensive because i kind of assume government hospitals have rats running around the hospital. Clearly i was wrong because i dont see any rats. Only a dead cockroach on the cafeteria floor. WTH.

But the programme is good. It's pretty interesting to watch the way the doctors and nurses care for the patients. And it's good because i met some really nice friends. :)

From left, Wendy (dbsk fan OMG :D ) , Ling Wei (who hates pink but wore a pink shirt anyway) and Melody (korean drama fan OMG OMG)
I know Wendy earlier from Mr Lee's tuition but I did not talk to her before until we both joined the programme.
Ling Wei sat next to me in the auditorium on the first day. :)
and melody just introduced herself. haha!
they are all really nice and make everything more bearable.
oh! there's dress code guy also (inside joke :P) but he's too tall to be in any pictures. HAHA
:D
Throughout the week, we just toured around the hospital and made brief visits to every wards.
We stopped by the eye clinic and watched the doctor while she treated a patient with glaucoma. It's an eye disease that affects people with heridetary disesase, myopia, diabetes and so on. The worst part is, it cannot be cured and they have to put eye drops every single day for the rest of their lifes. omg, i know right. faster go and check your eyes now. lol
We also visited the Orthopedic ward and observed patients with broken bones. Visitng the wards are pretty depressing but some of the patients are in a light mood and would sometimes engage us in conversations.
Hmm, i'm thinking of venturing into peadetrics because i simply love kids! :) They are so adorable. But i dont want to be a gynae cause i dont want to traumatise myself by looking at people's AHEMSSS throughout the whole day. LOL
We chatted with a few doctors and guess what. None of them gave any positive reviews at all.
Basically i heard these all over again.
1. Being a doctor is shit hard.
2. You need to have passion and patience.
3. Dont do this for your parents.
4. Buy loads of eyebags concealears (by moi)
5. Being a doctor is shit hard.
Seriously! all the HO looked like zombies cause they only got about an hour or two of sleep.
OMG, the scaries part in the mortuary and the forensic department. There are at least 5 air fresheners in the small space because there tend to be a foul smell. They warned us not to breathe through out mouth because the smell will stick to your tongue and you cant eat for the rest of the day.
and my nose was blocked that day. FML.
I sound like a wheezing old man on his deathbed. (=.=)
There are fridges inside for the adults and babies. yes, babies. so freaking sad i tell you. Almost cried. LOL. babies are supposed to run around saying GOO GOO GA GA, not be stuck in the freezer like frozen turkeys. T.T
Well, everyone was looking forward to see the dead body but all we could see is the black plastic bag only. They did showed us the bones of a victim whose head was smashed with an blunt object. Another one had a gunshot wound on the forehead.
That's basically it. Dont want to bore all of you with extra details. If you got any questions, call 1300-88-2525. HAHA!

OH YEAH!
I joined the on call programme yesterday from 9.00 PM to 1.00 AM. Yeah, it's really tiring but it's thrilling.
There were loads of asthma cases and a heart attack case. We went in the red zone (the critical stage) and observed the doctors on duty.
Ling Wei! my on call partner :)
There's a guy who was involved in a car accident. His hands were scraped, he broke one of his leg and required stitches all over. Whilst the doctor stitched him up, he still have the strength to answer his phone and to change his ringtone from Irreplacable by beyonce to Low by FloRida.
There are a few chidren crying their heart out as if the doctors are murdering them with an axe. I overheard a doctor saying PANDAI PANDAI BUDAK to the kid while the kid received an injection. lol
there's one baby who has penyakit kuning (what is that anyway) and was awaiting for the blood test result.
After a while, ling and I went to yam cha. HAHA! Eh! Doctors definately got curi tulang before right! Takkan they stay there for 5 hours without budging.
At 1.00 a.m. (well not really, it's 12.51 a.m.) we all headed home.
but not me. LOL
my dad's car broke down in front of the emergency entrance. WTH. had to push the car to the other side and waited for my mom to come and pick us up. HAHA so unlucky i know.
Arrived home and plonk onto the bed.
so, that's about it! i enjoyed myself and really deepen my understanding about this career. Hmm, i'm still contemplating about making medical as my career but i think for now, i'll just go with the flow and see where it takes me. :)
